*English below* De referendum commissie van de gemeente heeft ons een reactie gegeven op ons initiële verzoek. Dit was een negatief advies. De gemeenteraad zal hier over stemmen in mei. Ze stellen dat Amsterdam weinig te zeggen heeft over Buitenlandse Zaken en zich meer moet richten op haar eigen gemeente. Gelukkig is Halsema het hier mee eens en ging ze vorig jaar -waar we als Amsterdammers trots op kunnen zijn- naar Pride in Budapest om steun te betuigen. Ook heeft de referendum commissie gezegd dat de gemeente anders had moeten handelen tijdens de tijden van Apartheid in Zuid Afrika, toen Amsterdam een leidende positie nam in de boycot die later pas op nationaal niveau werd gehanteerd, en dat ze daarom nu ook het referendum niet aan raden. Maar tegen Apartheid staan moet worden aangemoedigd, niet verworpen als fout. Wij verwachten dan ook dat de gemeenteraad voor het houden van een referendum zal stemmen. Geef Amsterdammers hun stem. The city council will vote on this in May. They argue that Amsterdam has little say in foreign affairs and should focus more on its own municipality. Fortunately, Halsema agrees with this and she attended Pride in Budapest -something we Amsterdammers can be proud of- last year to show her support. The referendum committee also stated that the city should have acted differently during the Apartheid era in South Africa, when Amsterdam took a leading role in the boycott that was later adopted at the national level, and that they therefore do not recommend the referendum now either. But opposing Apartheid should be celebrated, not dismissed as a mistake. We therefore expect the city council to vote in favor of holding a referendum. Give the people of Amsterdammers a choice.
