A new academic year is starting, a year without resistance, a year of complacency; or so the executive board of the UvA might think. Yet this couldn't be further from the truth. While a brutal Israeli blockade is turning inhabitants of the Gaza strip into living carcasses, at a time when the entire strip has been flattened by Israeli bombing, the executive board of the UvA claims neutrality. The rector of the UvA, Peter-Paul Verbeek wrote in an open letter in May that the university can "use [its] scientific knowledge and insights to offer perspectives which can contribute to peace and hope". Well, here's a perspective for you, Peter-Paul: how about you stop the collaboration between the UvA and Thales, a company which equips the very drones now used by the Israeli army to maim children in Gaza? How about you cut ties with Ben-Gurion University in the Naqab, which helped develop the AI which automates the assassination of Palestinians? How about you dry those crocodile tears and stop enabling the very genocide which you say "horrifies" you? Join us for a sit-in on 8 September, at 12:45 in the ABC-hall on Roeterseiland.
