ROHINGYA REALITIES: From Junta Violence to US State Violence
UAAO
THIS THURSDAY!
Nurul Amin Shah Alam, a nearly blind Rohingya refugee from Myanmar (Burma), was abandoned by U.S. Border Patrol agents in Buffalo, NY. He was dropped off at a closed Tim Hortons, miles from his home without any means to contact his family or attorney. He was initially arrested for using a shower rod as a walking stick, which led to a misunderstanding and his subsequent detention. After spending a year in custody, he was released but immediately handed over to Border Patrol due to an immigration detainer. Despite his legal refugee status, he was abandoned and found deceased in freezing temperatures.
In light of the recent homicide of Shah Alam, we gather to for an education on the historical and continuing realities of Rohingya resistance and displacement, tracing the connections between Myanmar’s military junta and US state violence.
