September 27th will mark one year since Helene devastated our communities. The effects of this natural disaster have been compounded by the unnatural and criminal neglect that WNC faced from our federal government in its time of need. One year on and our communities continue to struggle for the relief and dignity they deserve. We must come together to fight for the solutions that will not only give our community members the dignity they deserve, but will also meet the challenge of increasing disasters for all those affected - From WNC to California to Texas.
We understand that the consequences still felt by Helene are not a natural result of a natural disaster, but are the result of real policy choices, and a system that prioritizes profits over people and the planet. So much could have been done to prepare our infrastructure to meet impending disasters that are an expected consequence of approaching climate catastrophe, and so much needs to be done now to prepare our communities to meet the next disaster. There are currently billions of dollars being used to fund terror campaigns against our immigrant neighbors while this money could be used for relief, recovery, and preparation.
The One Year Since Helene Forum will be a time to come together and mourn, but also a time to honor the efforts our communities made to help one another and to brainstorm real solutions to the consequences of disaster as we organize and fight to see these solutions become a reality!
