It should be the responsibility of the government to ensure that no child goes hungry. Yet, hunger for tens of millions of children in this country is a policy choice of the capitalist politicians of both the Republican and Democratic Parties who serve the same billionaires. It is a policy choice to give ICE billions to carry out racist deportations and the Pentagon trillions to destroy other countries, while kids go hungry. Even before the current SNAP and WIC crisis from the government shutdown, over 50 million people in the U.S., many of whom children, face food insecurity and hunger on a daily basis. We live in the richest country in the world, but just 900 billionaires own more wealth than tens of millions of working class families combined. We go to work everyday to take care of our families but the billionaires who do no work reap the benefits, while our children go hungry. The hunger crisis in the U.S. is an artificially manufactured crisis of capitalism. There is no shortage of food nor the capacity to produce and distribute food and all the basic necessities to end hunger and poverty in the United States. But the problem we face is a handful of billionaires control the vast wealth and resources of this country, while the rest of us are forced to make ends meet or go hungry. Capitalism is a system in which profits for billionaires are prioritized over the needs of the majority. We must fight for a new system—socialism—in which children’s and all people’s needs are prioritized over profits. We need a system without billionaires!
