Saturday Stand Up
Indivisible Bozeman
Every Saturday, we stand on the curb and show our signs, count friendly beeps from passing cars and trucks. And chat and get caught up with each other. We have had about a dozen people lately, though we expect to have more this particular Saturday because of the problems in Minnesota. The community to have a safe space to share our opinions.
Our protest activity is lawful and safe. The police know we are here because of my weekly emails to the liaison patrol officer. We use the buddy system, so we are not out here alone. We stay on the sidewalk. We do not block the sidewalk. We obey traffic rules. We do not go on private property. We do not do any violence or graffiti. We remain aware of our surroundings and talk about what we see. If someone approaches us to explain why we are stupid and wrong, we take one step away, turn partway toward them, and let them talk. We do not respond, or if we feel compelled to respond, we say something neutral like “Have a nice day.” Remaining excessively cheerful de-escalates many situations. If something is escalating uncomfortably, some of us video, and some call 911. And we help each other remember the rules.
Bozeman Rising is a grassroots network of community members who are leading initiatives, mobilizing neighbors, and advancing Indivisible’s One Million Rising strategy to resist authoritarianism and build a fair and equitable society.
A core principle behind all Bozeman Rising events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events.
