“What do you have to do? You must introduce Anas and others and others and more. Examples and portraits, people who are known and people who are unknown, those whom people know nothing about.” This is what Gazan journalist Isra al-Mudallal commanded us to do in the days following Anas al-Sharif’s martyrdom.
For months, Writers Against the War on Gaza (@wawog_now) has collected, translated, and edited more than 50 eulogies for Gaza’s martyred journalists, written by their colleagues, friends, and family. The testimonies speak to the will of Gaza’s journalists, and their insistence on continuing despite the world’s complicity—but they also function as a directive for us in the West. Repeatedly, Gaza’s journalists had only asked from us: to make sure we never stop speaking, to ensure that the world never forgets them.
In two weeks, in collaboration with WAWOG, we will share a number of these testimonies paying homage to our martyred journalist-heroes. The event will feature local vendors, a performance by the Palestinian Youth Choir, and an open forum to reflect on what our people have endured for the last two years. The so-called ceasefire in Gaza is designed to make us forget—about Gaza, about Israel’s still ongoing occupation of Palestine. Join us at Widdi Hall for a night of collective conversation, remembrance, and recommitment to the struggle.
