Buffalo, NY May Day 2026: Stand for Justice

May Day Strong

May Day 2026: Stand Up for Justice WNY Lawyers Defending Democracy Rally BUFFALO, N.Y. — Attorneys, law students, and community members will gather in Niagara Square in Buffalo on Friday, May 1, 2026, from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. for a public rally, “Stand Up for Justice: Lawyers Defending Democracy.” Lawyers are usually found in courtrooms, not in the streets. But the stakes are too high to remain silent. At a time when fundamental legal norms, democratic institutions, and constitutional protections are under increasing strain, members of the Western New York legal community are stepping forward to speak directly to the public. The rally will call attention to growing concerns, including attacks on judges and court orders, the targeting of lawyers and law firms, the weaponization of the Department of Justice, threats to civil rights, and challenges to free and fair elections. “Our legal system depends on the integrity of the courts, the independence of the profession, and the protection of constitutional rights,” said Samantha White, Esq. “When lawyers, judges, and those rights are under attack, the profession must respond.” Speakers will address issues including attacks on the judiciary, First and Fourth Amendment concerns, abuse of executive power, threats to voting rights, and broader threats to civil liberties and the rule of law. The rally is open to both lawyers and non-lawyers. Attendees are encouraged, if comfortable, to dress as they would for court and to bring a pocket Constitution. “The principles that form the foundation of our democracy are under serious attack, and our legal community has an ethical and moral responsibility to respond clearly, publicly, and with a united voice,” said the organizers. Organizers invite attorneys, law students, members of the legal profession, and community supporters to stand together in affirmation of constitutional governance, an independent judiciary, equal justice under the law, and the enduring importance of the rule of law in American democracy. “We urge you to attend and to encourage colleagues, members of your professional networks, and friends to join you,” said Denise O’Donnell, Attorney (retired), and John Lipsitz, Attorney, Co-Chairs of WNY Lawyers Defending Democracy. “We hope you will stand with us.” WNY Lawyers Defending Democracy is a regional coalition of lawyers and supporters who believe that democracy is in crisis and that there is an urgent need to take a public stand in defense of democratic institutions, constitutional rights, and the rule of law. Please note: A core principle behind all our events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
