Join us on Friday, April 3 from 6:00-7:30 PM at The Motley Coffeehouse at Scripps College, where Nodutdol will be holding a teach-in on our history of resistance and the ongoing struggle for Korea’s national liberation through the lens of the 4.3 Jeju Uprising. We will end with an overview of our US Out of Korea campaign, tying in lessons from the worker-led struggle of the Jeju Uprising that began in 1947, peaked in 1948, and continued until after the Korean War.
Information around the Jeju Uprising was heavily suppressed in South Korea until the early 2000s. We will interrogate the role of the US in the resulting massacre as the people of Jeju Island rose up against dictator Syngman Rhee and the occupying US Army Military Government in Korea (USAMGIK). By tracing Jeju’s unique revolutionary history and significance, we seek to challenge decades of narrative distortions around the uprising and the systemic erasure of the massacre, and draw on the enduring spirit of resistance that ignited in Jeju and and continues to live on today in the face of ongoing militarization and US occupation.
Doors open at 6:00 PM – please arrive early for food, refreshments, and tabling, where we’ll have new merch and artwork available, including woodblock printing. The teach-in will begin promptly. Make sure to RSVP at tinyurl.com/NDDx7CMinjung to secure your spot!
Please note that masks will be required except when eating or drinking, and will be available onsite.
