UNITED WE BLOOM: MAY DAY MAY 1ST 2026

Colorado Springs DSA

Wait, do you smell that? The roses are blooming & May Day is following suit! 🌬️🌹 Why is May Day so important to socialists? Socialists, communist, anarchists, activists, organizers, unionists, and workers all over the globe commemorate May 1st each year by paying respects to the historical labor struggle of organized workers, and honoring the sacrifices and lives lost in order for us to have 8 hour work days, worker protections, child labor laws, and much more (and more to come). Although May Day is celebrated around the world as International Workers Day or Labour Day, the US government and its anti-communist attitudes led to the fierce suppression of May Day celebrations due to its socialist origins beginning with the Haymarket Affair that killed several socialist and anarchist workers and injured hundreds more in Chicago in 1886. Instead, in 1894, the US created a more liberal, shallow holiday called “Labor Day”, now celebrated yearly in the US and Canada on the first Monday in September. As we continue to fight ongoing political suppression, we must not lose sight of our socialist history, nor the working class struggles that continue, or our achievements that are to come. Please join us in honoring workers of the past who made immense sacrifices and progress in the working class plight, and encourage one another as we continue the working class fight for further change to this very day. Our May Day 2026 celebration will take place on Friday, May 1st from 2pm-6pm at Acacia Park in downtown Colorado Springs. This event is open to the public so please stop by to enjoy free food, fun, and a loving dose of working class solidarity! And don’t forget to submit that PTO request! 🫵😉🌹💪 Sign our May Day Pledge: tinyurl.com/MayDayPledge2026 Check out our upcoming events: cosdsa.org/events Join DSA: cosdsa.org/join
