Indivisible
Giving Thanks for Our Healthcare Before They Take It Away
After our very first rally in downtown Conway (No Kings 2.0!), we want to continue building the momentum that is critical for turning back the forces of authoritarianism. November 15 is the last day that most local university students will be available for a local direct action event until the spring semester, so we are seizing that day to continue bringing together a multigenerational cross-section of our community in order to let the people of Conway know that they are not alone in the anxiety they feel at the present dismantling of our democracy.
IMPORTANT:
As this protest will be around a small park where families and children will be present, we need to be sensitive to parents who might be agitated by our presence. WE WILL SMILE AND WAVE AT EVERYONE. We will not engage in debate or attempt to "shame" those we disagree with. We will be nonviolent even in our speech.
Furthermore, we must be extremely diligent about policing our public signage: there should be absolutely ...
1) NO profanity
2) NO mention of Trump or the Republican Party
3) NO use of provocative language (e.g., "fascism," comparisons with nazis, etc.)
We will ask people to put down their signs or leave the rally if these requests are not adhered to. Tactically we must be disciplined and work on building bridges, not alienating the people of Conway. Our desire to vent our frustration is no excuse to damage the struggle to actually defeat authoritarianism. Do not worry that people will "miss" the fact that we are opposing the current regime. We don't need to spell that out. Being explicit will only alienate a community that overwhelmingly supported the current president in the last election.
Instead, we will insist that signs be limited to calling upon shared community values, values that will help build and broaden our civil resistance movement to include people we might disagree with on many other issues, but with whom we can make common cause against authoritarianism. These include:
1) saving our healthcare
2) saving rural hospitals
3) saving SNAP benefits
4) loving our neighbors
5) welcoming the stranger
6) recognizing the human dignity of all people, regardless of where they were born
7) demilitarizing American cities, etc.
Finally, this is NOT a permitted event. We will exercise our First Amendment right "peaceably to assemble" on the public sidewalk and not interfere with pedestrians or those using the Town Green park. If we are approached by law enforcement, please allow Coastal Democracy leadership to engage them. We will communicate any necessary developing information over a megaphone.

This a local Indivisible event!
A core principle behind all Indivisible events is a commitment to nonviolent action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values.
