Welcome to "Coastal Democracy No Kings!" in Conway, SC. This is a local Indivisible event. As you know, Horry County is a bastion of support for Donald Trump (69% of Horry County voted for Trump in 2024). However, many of these voters are uncomfortable with the authoritarian direction the administration has taken. Our movement-building strategy is designed to reach “soft” Trump supporters and help them remember their own values (values that the administration is crushing under foot). Our hope is that for some, this cognitive dissonance will help them peel off from Trump and consider opposition to the administration's encroaching authoritarianism. We want to invite these Trump supporters to begin thinking about standing up for the sort of community they’d like to live in, and in order to do that, we need to be strategic. We ask folks not to unnecessarily alienate community members of good conscience with explicitly anti-Trump signage (our goal is to remain technically nonpartisan--this will help us keep a foothold on CCU campus). Instead, let's focus on a rejection of cruelty toward immigrants, a rejection of a police state, support of due process, a rejection of kings, support of democracy, support of workers over billionaires, loving thy neighbor, welcoming the stranger, etc. Please check out our Coastal Democracy Instagram account.
