January 6 - Never Again
Remember?
January 6th, 2021. Trump incited a violent attack on our Capitol in an effort to stop the certification of the results of the November 2020 election.
The result?
The Government Accountability Office estimated that the true cost to taxpayers was $2.7 billion, a figure that included property damage, expenses incurred by the Capitol Police, the District of Columbia, and federal agencies, and costs to improve security.
Approximately 140 law enforcement officers sustained injuries during the attack, some of which were severe and career-ending, including brain injuries, cracked ribs, spinal disc damage, and eye loss.
Officer Brian Sicknick, a U.S. Capitol Police officer who was assaulted with chemical spray during the riot, collapsed later that evening and died of two strokes the next day.
Four police officers who responded to the attack subsequently died by suicide: Officer Howard Liebengood (Capitol Police), Officer Jeffrey Smith (D.C. Metropolitan Police). Officer Gunther Hashida (D.C. Metropolitan Police), and Officer Kyle DeFreytag (D.C. Metropolitan Police).
More than 1,500 people were charged with federal crimes related to the deadly riot. Hundreds of people were charged misdemeanor offenses for entering the Capitol illegally. Others were charged with felony offenses, including assault for beating police officers. Leaders of the Oath Keepers and the Proud Boys extremist groups were convicted of seditious conspiracy for plotting to use violence to stop the peaceful transfer of power.
About 250 people were convicted of crimes by a judge or a jury after a trial. At least 1,020 others plead guilty.
More than 1,000 rioters were sentenced, with over 700 receiving at least some time behind bars. The rest were given some combination of probation, community service, home detention or fines.
Then?
On his first day in office, despite warnings from senior Republicans, President Trump issued a blanket pardon to the more than 1,500 people charged in the deadly insurrection.
Convicted rioters walked free and also are no longer required to pay their court-ordered restitution.
At least 33 January 6th insurrectionists pardoned by President Trump have been rearrested, charged or sentenced for additional crimes, including:
Six who were charged with committing child sex crimes, ranging from sexual assault to possession of child pornography;
Five who were charged with illegal possession of weapons, including at least two who had a previous domestic violence conviction;
Five who were arrested or charged with driving while impaired or under the influence (two resulted in fatalities); and
Two who were charged with rape.
NEVER AGAIN!
Teddy Uhlman and his Visibility Brigade volunteers are going to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the January 6th, 2021 insurrection. Delco Indivisible and No Kings Springfield are collaborating with the brigade on this important event.
We hope to get enough volunteers to cover at least two overpasses over three shifts throughout the day on January 6. We will be discussing options on the planning call as well as possible ground actions to support the Visibility Brigade.
Recommit to standing up to Trump and his enablers in 2026 by helping to plan and then coming out for this protest event. Remind the voters of Delaware County what’s at stake this year in our battle to gain control of our U.S. and State legislatures.
