Colonial Origins of Queerphobia
We’re very excited to announce our first event with @centeroncolfax ! As we continue to face escalating fascism every single day, it’s incredibly important to build relationships that broaden and strengthen our community. We know that the vital work The Center does for queer community in Denver is directly connected to our work for Palestine, because there is no queer liberation without Palestinian liberation 🏳️🌈🇵🇸🏳️⚧️
✨ Colonial Origins of Queerphobia ✨
Western societies market queer acceptance as a Western, modern idea. However, the opposite is true. Pre-colonization, the vast majority of indigenous groups around the world held space for what we now call queer identities. This session will explore how Western Europe, specifically the British, exported cisheteropatriarchy, homophobia, and transphobia during their violent colonial conquests. Participants will learn this history while discussing the current political ramifications of transphobia, and pinkwashing seen here and in other settler states.
We’ll also have snacks and time to socialize so come learn with us and make a new friend 🌈
