Indigenous struggles and climate action
Mni Wiconi - Water is Life — this was the slogan of the Standing Rock Sioux led protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline. It’s no coincidence that indigenous communities have been at the forefront of climate action — from the Mapuche in Chile, to the Sami in Norway, to the Ogoni in Nigeria and countless others — indigenous resistance to capitalist plundering and extraction is inextricably linked to the fact that these communities have maintained vital relationships with the Earth and by consequence have accrued extensive knowledge about land management, water conservation, temperature patterns and the interdependence of flora and fauna. Indigenous territories contain 80% of the world’s biodiversity and they are often the first to face the devastating impacts of the climate crisis.
Come to our meeting at 7pm on Wednesday 10 September in Bar Rua where we will hear from Lenn, a ROSA activist and researcher into environmental struggles led by the Sami people of Norway.
