Kentuckians For The Commonwealth

Leave the Heat On: Rally at the Capitol

Rally with us December 8th on the North Lawn of the Capitol, 11:00am ET to tell Governor Beshear: NO MORE DISCONNECTIONS THIS WINTER! In light of the confusion caused by the government shutdown, the lack of statewide weather-related protections, and the ongoing uncertainty around long-term funding for federal programs impacting housing stability (including HUD, SNAP, and LIHEAP), we are calling on Governor Beshear to ensure that Kentuckians stay safe this winter by issuing an immediate moratorium on utility disconnections through March 2026. Kentucky is one of only 9 states in the country with no statewide protections against utility disconnections during cold weather. What we’re demanding is not unprecedented, especially as Kentucky faces increasing extreme weather events. A pause in the government shutdown doesn’t change the dire situation that many people are facing this winter. Amidst rising electricity and other costs, no one should have to choose between the necessities of paying for their electric, having groceries, or buying medicine. We’ll gather at the North Lawn where we’ll highlight the importance of disconnections protections during extreme weather by listening to speakers and enjoying art and music. We may be able to help with transportation needs. Full details upon registration. This rally is hosted and supported by a growing list of organizations, including Advocacy Based on Lived Experience (ABLE), Association of Community Ministries, the Black Leadership Action Coalition of Kentucky (BLACK), the Black Leadership Action Coalition of Kentucky Action Fund (BLACK AF), BLM Louisville, Kale & Flax, Kentuckians for Energy Democracy (K4ED), Kentuckians for the Commonwealth (KFTC), Metropolitan Housing Coalition (MHC. Kentucky Conservation Committee, Pushing Forward, and Sierra Club KY.
