Teton County Sheriff’s Off-ICE OUT
Indivisible
The Teton County Sheriff’s Office-ICE is actively assisting ICE by conducting immigration related investigations on targeted traffic stops for minor violations. So far TCSO has arrested and held over 100 members of our community for detention and removal by ICE. This clearly breaks the community promise made to us by Sheriff Carr and is an obvious breach of trust between TCSO and the community.
The primary tool TCSO is using to assist ICE is newly passed Wyoming legislation based upon HB0116. This new legislation invalidates a legally issued driver’s license from another state if the investigating officer suspects the driver is undocumented or did not enter the country legally.
In practice TCSO deputies are using this legislation to initiate traffic stops for minor traffic violations (ex: 2 to 3 mph over the speed limit) and if presented with a legally issued out-of-state driver’s license, arresting the individual on misdemeanor charges if they suspect they may be undocumented, and holding them for up to 48 hours in the County Jail for ICE to collect them for transfer to ICE detention centers.
This is predominantly being applied to drivers who appear to be of Hispanic descent with over 100 being turned over to ICE so far. You can probably guess how many white drivers are being stopped for speeds in excess of 2 to 3 mph of the speed limit. You can also probably guess how many white drivers with legally issued out-of-state licenses are being arrested for any traffic violations at all.
This protest is to demand that the Teton County Sheriff’s Off-ICE ceases using these and other racial profiling tactics and uphold the promise Sheriff Carr made to this community.
We will peacefully assemble at the Teton County Sheriff’s Office at 175 S. Willow St. on Saturday, February 28th at 11:00am to show support for our neighbors and community members and demand the TCSO ceases using racial profiling tactics, ceases conducting immigration related investigations, and ceases actively assisting ICE beyond the minimum required by law.
Please sign the petition at the following link to urge Sheriff Carr to end these tactics and restore the community’s trust in his department:
