FILL THE ROOM -- No Deal with Ice!
Michigan's first deal with ICE was from Jackson County.
In March 2025, County Sheriff Schuette signed a "287.g" partnership to hold people in jail longer than normal -- so ICE can disappear them later. But we can still stop it.
Two months ago in Center Line, over 75 people filled a meeting and gave public comment for two hours. Two days later, their city pulled out of their agreement. We can match those numbers!
Let's fill the room at the Board of Commissioners meeting, January 20th, 7PM! Bring a friend and bring a comment. Tell our neighbors that we don't want our cops helping ICE!
NO DEALS, NO RESOURCES, NO SUPPORT!
For more information, please call (517)206-4860, email [email protected], or find the Jackson County Immigrant Coalition on other platforms. Additionally, visit Alex's website for helpful information!
Ideas for Public Comment
"Our 287.g deal has our police holding people for ICE. Do we have the space for that?"
"Do we have the spare resources to assist ICE? They're the ones with billions in federal funding; why do they need our stuff?"
"The county jail is in horrifying condition. Keeping people in there longer than normal is inhumane."
"Do we have the money to pay for the required training? We can't even find the funds to fix the jail."
"The county police are already short-staffed. We don't have the people to make the deal worth it."
"ICE has been known to recruit new officers straight from local police stations with huge $50 THOUSAND dollar hiring bonuses. Working more closely with ICE could mean losing officers."
"If something happens and somebody sues, won't the county have to pay out? Do we want that liability?"
"Washtenaw County refused to make a deal because of [x] concerns. Couldn't that happen here, too?"
"As a resident of [neighboring county], I'm worried how this could affect my home..."
