The struggle against imperialism, against racism, colonialism, and capitalism, cannot be fought without the struggle against patriarchy and without the full participation and leadership of women!
If we are for the liberation of oppressed women we must push back against the imperialist pillage of their countries, the ongoing colonial plunder which subsidises our lifestyles and welfare state, and push back against the white washing of national liberation struggles.
South Asian women in the UK have suffered a long and painful history of violence and prejudice. In 1969, Indian women were unknowingly fed chapatis laced with radioactive isotope as part of a science experiment. In the 70s, they were forced to undergo virginity tests at Heathrow. Today, Desi women are being raped in their homes in racially motivated attacks. Young hijabi women have their veils ripped off them. A 6 year old Indian girl in Ireland was assaulted. There is no end to what we face.
When Palestinian fighter Leila Khaled says: “We are ready to pay blood and flesh to liberate this land,” she’s not advocating for abstract violence—she’s pointing to the material reality that liberation requires confronting the systems that profit from oppression, not just demanding inclusion within them.
The Palestinian struggle teaches us that any feminism worth the name must be grounded in centering the value of the national liberation struggle and uncompromised sovereignty for the South of the world. This means rejecting abstract calls for “non-violence” or “dialogue,” while actively engaging in the hard work of movement building that can actually challenge and defeat British nationalist chauvinism and imperialism.
