Cut The Contract
In October 2023, the City of Minneapolis contracted Israeli tech company Zencity to poll Minneapolis residents on their opinion of the Minneapolis Police Department (MPD). This is a 3-year contract, spending $500,000 in taxpayer money on an Israeli surveillance company with roots in Unit 8200 of the IDF. The contract can be canceled at anytime. We demand our elected officials cut the contract immediately and indefinitely.
As we approach the High Holiday season, we take on the spiritual work of teshuvah — the process of acknowledging our faults, making amends, and “returning” to a righteous path after wrongdoing. Addressing MPD’s long history of racial profiling, misconduct, and use of excessive force with targeted AI surveys is an unacceptable response to decades of harm and community distrust.
While some falsely claim that divesting from Israeli companies and opposing Israel’s apartheid is antisemitic, we insist that contracting with a surveillance company that profits off of surveillance and local policing is against our Jewish values.
We do not find safety in hyper-militarized nationstates, policing, or surveillance. We find safety in our Jewish values of social justice and in solidarity with people who are resisting oppression around the world. From Minneapolis to Palestine, we will dream and build toward a liberated world. We call on the City of Minneapolis and all people of conscience to join us.
Please join us on September 8 and September 10 for Cut the Contract Teach-ins! We will explore the history of the Zencity contract, the company’s connections to police violence in Minnesota, the difference between anti-zionism and antisemitism, and more. Masks are required. We hope to see you there!
