The Artist Must Take Sides: Culture & the Movement Past, Present, & Future
The People’s Forum
127 years ago today, revolutionary artist Paul Robeson was born. The son of an escaped slave, Robeson became one of the most gifted and consequential artists of the 20th century. But perhaps even more significant and consequential were his steadfast political convictions and his understanding that the oppression of Black Americans was inseparable from the oppression of colonized and exploited peoples across the world. When the U.S. government revoked his passport, blacklisted his records, and demanded venues to shut their doors to him, he refused to bow down to their pressure and stood strongly with the people of the world in their fight for justice.
On his birthday, it is our duty not only to celebrate Paul Robeson, but study his life and legacy. To learn more about Robeson and other revolutionary artists in the movement, join us starting April 21st for The Artist Must Take Sides: Culture & the Movement Past, Present, & Future — a 4-session hybrid course presented by Artists Against Apartheid & The People’s Forum. In-person in NYC or virtual from anywhere in the world.
