THE POLITICAL CRISIS IN GREECE AND THE ROLE OF THE DIASPORA

Dimitris Tafidis

For decades now, the people of Greece have endured neoliberal austerity, imposed by the ruling class of the country. The banks, the shipowners, and the tourism industry have been recording some record profits, while wages remain stagnant and not enough to live off. The crime of Tempe that saw 57 people be killed at the hands of the state was the culmination of decades of politics that favour the rich. The farming sector scandal, the attacks on the working class, and the students show that the Greek government is not willing to concede to the side of workers. It is a deeply reactionary government. The deeper involvement of the Greek military in regional wars in the form of deepening the death alliance with the US, and imposing its interests in the east Mediterranean has turned us to a target. There have been however, signs of resistance. In the form of the mass strike and protest that occurred last year in commemoration for the crime of Tempe, the strikes against the 13 hour day, and against the genocide in Gaza shows us what a fightback can look like. Here in Australia, while we are thousands of kilometres away, we face the same threats to our living standards, and safety. The Albanese government was the first western government to support the war on Iran, while at the same time it's been the government presiding over the largest attack on living standards of the Australian working class. This meeting will be a discussion on the role that the diaspora can play in learning from the struggle in Greece and what we can do to not only stand in solidarity, but fight against our own government here. Join us this Saturday 14 March at 4pm in Democritus House 583 High Street, Northcote.
