Since the 18th century, Jews in North Africa and across the Ottoman Empire have celebrated the end of Passover with their Muslim neighbors. Mimouna was also known as Leyl Hametz in Syria, or in Iraq, as Santak Khadra. As the sun sets on the final night, Muslims return chametz, or leavened bread products, back to Jewish homes, where these foods were prohibited during the holiday. Jews then host joyous gatherings, eating chametz-filled treats like mofleta and dancing and singing.
But Mimouna changed after the rise of Zionism and ethnonationalism in the region, and has been increasingly viciously co-opted and weaponized against Palestinians in Israel and the US.
As fascism continues to rage in our backyard, the US and Israeli militaries instigate war in Iran, displace x people in Lebanon, and incite violence on Palestinians in Gaza and the occupied West Bank, and as our community grapples with how to resist, we know that gathering is one of the most necessary elements to build liberatory movements that sustain and nourish us for generations to come.
This year, we are hosting Mimouna for that very reason: to honor the life-giving traditions that our North African Jewish and Muslim ancestors embodied to ignite the solidarity necessary to build a better future for us all.
JSWANA Bay’s Mimouna Celebration & fundraiser for Palestine will include music, dancing, ritual, food, and a place for Arab Jewish and Muslim communities in the Bay Area to come together in the same room.
