On August 15, South Koreans will mark the 80th anniversary of liberation from Japan with mass protests against US war games and Trump’s tariffs. In the US, Nodutdol and our partners will mobilize alongside our people in South Korea to demand an end to 80 years of US occupation and imperialist war in Korea. Once again, the US is moving forward with the annual Ulchi Freedom Shield war games: a massive series of war drills that rehearse the invasion of North Korea. Recently, North Korea issued statements clarifying that dialogue with the US and South Korea is impossible as long as both parties continue war threats like Ulchi Freedom Shield, and refuse to accept the reality that North Korea is now a nuclear state. The US has since announced it will “scale down” Ulchi Freedom Shield by postponing some field training exercises. However, this is not a genuine gesture. The issue is not the timing of US war games, but the fact that they exist at all. A war threat is a war threat. The only way to revive the possibility of diplomatic resolution in Korea is for a complete end to all US-South Korea war games. Popular anger against the US is growing in South Korea thanks to the recent tariff deal. South Korea’s exports to the US will now be tariffed at 15%, while US goods get no equivalent tariff in South Korea. What’s worse, the South Korean government has agreed to invest $350 billion in US industry and purchase $100 billion in US liquid natural gas, which is twice as expensive as Russian equivalents. This is essentially a massive transfer of wealth from the South Korean working class to US corporations and their shareholders. Trump has ripped the mask of liberalism away to reveal the exploitative nature of US imperialism in Korea. As consciousness and popular struggle advance in our homeland, we in the diaspora must build anti-imperialist solidarity and bring the struggle for national liberation into the belly of the beast.
