The first British Governor of Jerusalem, Sir Ronald Storrs, said the Empire aimed to build “a loyal little Jewish Ulster in a sea of hostile Arabism”. Britain exported to Palestine the personnel used, and the methods perfected, in the Irish War of Independence. Many Black and Tan men were sent to Palestine, valued for their experience in brutal counter-insurgency.
