Lumumba, 65 years later: justice still unresolved
Sixty-five years after the assassination of Patrice Émery Lumumba, the fight for truth and justice remains unfinished.
On January 20, 2026, the Chamber of Council of the Brussels Court of First Instance will hold a procedural hearing as part of the criminal investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assassination of Patrice Lumumba, as well as Maurice Mpolo and Joseph Okito, executed on January 17, 1961.
This hearing takes place at a decisive moment:
Étienne Davignon, the last remaining suspect still alive in this case, may represent the final opportunity for Belgian justice to examine individual criminal responsibilities for these crimes committed in a colonial context.
On the same day at 2:00 PM (CET), a press conference will be held at the Press Club Brussels Europe, also broadcast online, with the participation of:
• members of the Lumumba family,
• the family’s legal team,
• representatives of the European Center for Constitutional and Human Rights (ECCHR),
🧭 moderated by Geneviève Kaninda (African Futures Lab).
Remembering Lumumba means refusing silence.
It means demanding truth, accountability, and dignity for the martyrs of colonial history.
