Announcing Talk 307 #ColonialCartoons – British Visual Propaganda In India by Dr Priya Gohad In the mid-nineteenth century, visual satire had become an important part of the British press through Illustrated magazines like Punch. These become a kind of propaganda tool through which complex political events were conveyed to the public in a simple but emotionally powerful way. Visual communication like cartoons also became a powerful tool used by the British to shape public opinion and justify colonial rule in India. Register now at: Link In Bio About the speaker: Dr Priya Gohad works as Museum Curator at the Museum of Cartoon Art, Savitribai Phule Pune University. She holds a PhD in Archaeology along with a Diploma in Heritage Management and Museology. She has been awarded fellowships from Indian Council of Historical Research (ICHR) and Department of Science & Technology, Government of India (DST) for her research in Archaeology. She has also worked as Consulting Archaeologist at Kirloskar Consultants and Janawani - an initiative of MCCIA, and as a Research Associate for the multi-university research project ‘Cultural Heritage and Identities of Europe’s Future’ (CHIEF) led by Aston University, UK. Her research interests include heritage management, ancient Indian history, museum studies, art, architecture, culture and archaeology.
