#ColonialCartoons – British Visual Propaganda In India by Dr Priya Gohad
In the mid-nineteenth century, visual satire had become an important part of the British press through Illustrated magazines like Punch. These become a kind of propaganda tool through which complex political events were conveyed to the public in a simple but emotionally powerful way. Visual communication like cartoons also became a powerful tool used by the British to shape public opinion and justify colonial rule in India. At our Online Talk #ColonialCartoons, Dr Priya Gohad, curator at Pune University’s Museum of Cartoon Art, talks about and shows us some of the examples of visual propaganda using cartoons used by the British in colonial India related to various issues such as freedom struggle, the world wars, and more.
