We are honored to invite the Palestinian community and all residents of Cyprus who stand in solidarity with Palestine to a special event commemorating the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The event will feature a screening of the documentary film “1948: Creation and Catastrophe”, followed by an open discussion.
The Significance of November 29, 1947
November 29 holds deep significance in Palestinian history. On this date in 1947, the UN General Assembly adopted Resolution 181, known as the “Partition Plan,” which recommended dividing Mandatory Palestine into separate Arab and Jewish states, with a special international regime for Jerusalem.
This plan, rejected by the Arab leadership, is widely viewed as a direct precursor to the 1948 war and the subsequent Nakba (the “Catastrophe”), which resulted in the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians from their homes and land.
The UN annually observes November 29 as the “International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People” to remind the global community that the Question of Palestine remains unresolved, and that the Palestinian people have yet to attain their inalienable rights, including the right to self-determination, national independence, and sovereignty.
The film screening and subsequent discussion will offer an opportunity to delve into these pivotal historical events and their lasting impact.
