Sumud
Jewish Voice for Peace PDX
Sumud (Arabic: صمود) meaning steadfastness or steadfast perseverance.
From the dismantling of the health care system, hospitals being destroyed, and critical supplies unavailable, to health care workers who are trying to stay alive and
function. Every aspect of life in Gaza is destroyed or is being destroyed right now. At this crucial moment
in history, a local production company J Haaken Productions, presents the short film SUMUD: A
Doctor’s Report on Genocide and Survival in Gaza (2025). The film is a sequel to THE PALESTINE
EXCEPTION (2025), a documentary that follows pro-Palestinian campus protests from fall 2023 to fall
2024.
As increasing numbers of journalists in Gaza are killed by Israeli forces, Gazan health care workers and
international medical volunteers serve as vital reporters bearing witness to the ongoing genocide. The film
follows a Portland-based anesthesiologist, Travis Meleen, volunteering in Gaza, with commentary from
Egyptian-Canadian journalist and Oregonian writer, Omar El Akkad, reporting on the genocide. He is the
author of One Day, Everyone Will Have Always Been Against This. A screening of this 26 minute film
will be followed by a panel discussion.
