The Public Reading “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence"

Coalition Against Project 2025

The Sacramento Poor People’s Campaign (Sac PPC) and other groups are calling to end the Wars and their impacts on our bodies, minds, and souls; on our environment and climate; and on our economic and global well-being. Join us on Monday, April 6, 5:30 PM Rally and 6 PM at the Public Reading “Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence" at First United Methodist Church, 2100 J St, Sacramento, CA 95816. Free and open to all. The Sacramento Poor People's Campaign invites you to a public reading of Dr. Martin Luther King, Ir.'s historic speech Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence Martin Luther King. Jr, giving his Beyond Vietnam: A Time to Break Silence speech at Riverside Church on April 4, 1967. Dr. King spoke the truth in 1967, and we are witnessing these same realities unfold before our eyes in 2026. Dr. King warned that the war was tearing America apart, and the address took place one year before his assassination on April 4, 1968. The historical significance solidified his role as a radical conscience for justice rather than just a civil rights leader. To this day, it is considered one of his most courageous and influential speeches. Breaking the Silence Dr. King felt compelled by his conscience to stop the "betrayal" of his silence regarding the war, insisting that true leaders cannot remain neutral in times of moral crisis. Breaking the Silence Dr. King identified the interconnected issues of racism, extreme materialism, and militarism as the root of America's problems. Breaking the Silence Dr. King called for an immediate halt to all bombing, a unilateral ceasefire to create negotiations, and a specific timeline for the withdrawal of all troops from Vietnam. Breaking the Silence Dr. King famously declared that he could not tell inner-city young men to use nonviolence when his own government was the "greatest purveyor of violence in the world today." The Sac PPC and other groups call for an end to all wars and their impacts on our bodies, minds, and souls, as well as on our environment and climate, and our economic and global well-being.
