Yesterday, March 10th, the Public Safety at City Council committee passed a 1-year Moratorium, with a vote of 9-0, that the detention center in Seattle will not be allowed (at least for a year). This is the result of over 6 weeks of community organizing and advocacy to keep Seattle’s residents safe. Today, people of Seattle can see the fruits of their labor!
While this is a step in the right direction, this hasn’t been easy. It has come after much work and pressure from Seattle’s residents, and while we definitely have allies, such as council member Alexis Mercedes Rinck, who has shown support and a willingness to engage with the community, some other city council members have not been as supportive or actively involved in advocacy efforts.
This victory is the result of people’s power: organizing, protesting, and putting pressure to stop the Seattle detention center. City Council listened to those they serve, and we showed we care.
For those doubting the impact of attending city council meetings, this result proves that hard work and persistence create change.
More challenges remain. ICE is still a threat, but our work continues until ICE is out of Seattle for good. There is still so much work to do and so many more fights to come, so let’s take this victory as a push to keep the struggle alive and persist in the fight to keep Seattle’s residents truly safe from ICE and any form of racist and political repression.
Remember to join us at the People’s Town Hall on April 11th, 3 pm, at Cherry Street Village. Everyone is welcome, including city council members. Since many official meetings happen during work hours, the Seattle Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression is hosting this event on a weekend to make it accessible. Make your voice heard!
