Demonstration for Palestinian Refugee

On the night of October 6th to 7th, at 4 am, Mahmoud, a 26-year-old Palestinian refugee, committed suicide in the 127 bis closed center. According to relatives, his suicide was caused by the inhumane conditions of his detention. For two months, Mahmoud Faraj Allah had been detained alongside other Palestinian refugees and exiled people. He had been trying to obtain recognition of his refugee status in Belgium for three years. For two years, Palestinian refugees have been arrested and detained in closed centers. The Belgian state is placing each of them at risk of deportation from Belgian territory, while the Palestinian people are being systematically massacred by the Israeli state. According to several detainees at the 127 bis closed center, detention conditions are terrible. Hunger and unsanitary conditions reign. Healthcare is lacking, and violence by guards is recurrent. In a testimony published on October 7, Anas Hmam, a Moroccan activist also detained in the closed center and who regularly testifies about detention conditions and struggles, wrote a post about Mahmoud: « He had lost his mother. He had asked to be released to mourn. He had written. He had begged. The administration ignored him. The system crushed him. The silence killed him. » Despite Mahmoud’s written request to the center’s management to allow him to grieve, nothing has been done by the center’s management. Many Palestinian refugees are currently detained in various closed centers in Belgium. Since the beginning of September, the Brussels Palestinian community and the Palestine solidarity movement have denounced a campaign of repression and « roundups » against Palestinian refugees. Nearly a dozen arrests and detentions in closed centers have taken place since September. A call was made to demonstrate on Saturday, October 11, at 4 p.m. in front of the 127 bis.
