āš§ No ICE in Surprise: State of the City Protest & Community Call to the Public
Four council meetings. Two months. Zero formal action.
On Tuesday, April 14th, Mayor Kevin Sartor will make his State of the City presentation at Surprise Stadium ā and we will be there to deliver a message of our own: the time for standing on the sidelines is over. The council's next meeting will include an agenda item on ICE's human warehouse in Surprise. We demand the council pass a formal resolution opposing any ICE detention facility in Surprise. We will make sure they know the community is still watching.
Mayor Sartor has refused to stand with his own residents on this issue. At the April 7th council meeting, he capped public comment at one hour ā denying dozens who had waited for hours their chance to be heard ā and cut the livestreaming video feed while public comments were being delivered, though audio remained available. The community showed up in force. Not a single voice inside chambers spoke in support of the ICE warehouse. The mayor needs to get the message.
This action is open to anyone who does not want to see a regional ICE processing center open in our community.
