BENEFIT SHOW FOR APFO
APFO (All Peoples Fighting Oppression)
APFO is a radical feminist group serving folks on the streets in Toronto for over a year through consistent outreach, encampment support, crisis intervention, and mediation with kops to avoid arrest. Their outreach efforts are all inclusive, but with the understanding of intersectionality they focus on supporting and advocating for marginalized femme presenting and queer people on the streets facing the greatest vulnerability, both within their own communities and in government systems.
APFO doesn’t take any government grants, so donations from the community are absolutely essential and have kept them sustainable so far. As shelters and warming centres are overcapacity, and the houseless population in Toronto grows well over 16 000 people, grassroots organizations like them providing the survival and relational necessities which government programs lack are crucial. They’ve been out multiple times a week during this ongoing polar vortex handing out warming supplies and getting folks a hotel space if needed. Winter is the most expensive time of the year. One week’s worth of outreach supplies easily goes above $1000 as we stretch resources.
