Banners Over I-5 - No Troops on Our Streets

Join Indivisible Greater Vancouver for a Banner Drop over I-5! We’re making a bold, visible stand to defend our democracy and push back against the Trump administration’s illegal and unconstitutional actions. During peak commuting hours, we’ll raise our banners high over I-5 to show that our community is awake, united, and ready to fight for what’s right. Starting this month, “No Troops on Our Streets” will be the focus of our weekly Banner Waving Over I-5 event. Trump has deployed 2,000, armed National Guard troops to the streets of Washington, DC, supposedly to “fight crime.” Even though violent crime is at a 30-year low there. Even though the mayor objects to it. Even though a law says the military cannot be used to police civilians on US soil. The troops are not stationed in the part of the city that has the most crime. They are not trained in law enforcement. And the deployment takes them away from their families, their jobs, and their normal duties of helping their states during natural disasters. It also is costing $1 million a day. Worst of all, Trump is not really using them to fight crime. He is using them to intimidate his political opponents, to squelch dissent and to get us all used to the idea of living in a police state. And he plans to deploy more National Guard troops to 19 other states. This is not normal, and it must be stopped. Join us at our weekly banner waving event to show we strongly oppose this. Bring signs saying, “No Troops in Our Streets” and “No Troops in DC.” Bring noisemakers saying we won’t stay silent as Trump tries to turn our nation into a police state. When: Fridays 4–5 PM Where: I-5 Overpass at E. Evergreen Blvd (just past the Vancouver Community Library) Let’s be seen and make our message loud and clear! Bring your energy—and your own sign if you’d like—to express how you feel. Let’s show them we’re not backing down. Safety tips for attending rallies in hot weather: wear a wide brimmed hat and light colored, breathable clothing drink plenty of water at the first sign of heat illness (dizziness, muscle cramps, headache, nausea) move to a cooler location and slowly drink a cool beverage. Seek medical attention if you do not feel better. (WA State Dept of Health) Your safety is our top concern. If you need assistance, please reach out to the organizers. If you are concerned about your ability to stand or walk outside during hot temperatures, please stay home! IGV is deeply committed to nonviolence as both a principle and a strategy. We at IGV strongly believe that peaceful, nonviolent activism offers social movements the most power to effect change. Through peaceful protests, we set an example of making our voices heard with dignity, empowered by truth. IGV does not condone intimidation, threats, vandalism, interference with access to business or any other lawless actions. If instigators or opponents attempt to violate our commitment to non-violence, we will try to de-escalate and end the event if needed to maintain a safe environment. You can read more about Indivisible’s national commitment to nonviolence here: 🔗 indivisible.org/commitment-nonviolence We also value and are guided by the research of Dr. Erica Chenoweth, whose work shows that nonviolent movements are significantly more successful than violent ones in achieving lasting social and political transformation: 🔗 Paths to Resistance – Harvard Kennedy School Together, we stand strong, peaceful, and resolute—because nonviolence is not passive. It is powerful.
